Gosfield Hall

This Grade I-listed country mansion is located near Braintree. Constructed in 1545, it is believed to be the earliest surviving Tudor mansion in the country with a fully-preserved courtyard. The property also boasts ten acres of grounds, a lake with carp and a beautiful fountain. The house itself boasts fine preserved period architecture and enjoys a panoramic vista of the estate.

Experience a regal sentiment as you host your ceremony either outside or in the majestic Queen's Gallery. Each wedding party hosted at Gosfield assumes its grand atmosphere, with every detail catered for flawlessly, enabling you to enjoy a charming day at the venue. The delicious cuisine is prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients - including herbs and vegetables grown in Gosfield's own gardens - and there is a stunning fairytale bridal suite for the newlyweds, a further 19 bedrooms for their guests.

History

The mansion was erected for Sir John Wentworth, a member of Cardinal Wolsey's household, in 1545. Later frequented by Queen Elizabeth I, the house rapidly gained a reputation as a palatial environment, fit for highstanding members of society.

In 1691 the estate was passed to Sir Thomas Millington, who reconstructed The Grand Salon, then changed hands through multiple owners, and during the French Revolution became the residence of King Louis XVIII while he lived in exile in England.

Restoration works were carried out by Samuel Courtauld, who resided in the house between 1854 and 1881, and it was used as a base for Essex troops in World War II. Nowadays it serves as an event venue and accommodates 250 weddings per year.

Your tastebuds will be tantalised by Gosfield Hall's delicious in-house cuisine. Either choose from the delicious wedding menu options or adjust these to create a menu ideal for your specific taste. Wedding breakfasts are prepared and cooked with herbs and vegetables all grown in Gosfield's very own garden. There are lots of vegetarian or vegan options and a children's menu.

Accommodation

Gosfield Hall showcases a stunning Rococo Bridal Suite, which contains marbled pillars, a four-poster bed and palatial décor. The suite is the ideal place for the newlyweds to rest after their fairytale day. Also within the property are 20 bedrooms which are yours exclusively. These are all delightfully styled and look out over the courtyards and grounds. Included in all wedding-night accommodation is early check-in, complimentary White Company products and a delicious breakfast the following day.

    We got married this weekend at Gosfield and it was the best weekend of our lives. If you are looking for class, elegance and genuine history then have your wedding here. Our wedding planner was so relaxed and friendly but very professional and I felt like I could call her about anything and she could answer my questions or calm my nerves. Food and service were spot on and we have already had lots of messages from our guests saying how much they enjoyed the wedding and being at the venue. Gosfield is simply brimming with atmosphere. Perfect weekend!
