About

After marrying in Alpheton Church and hosting their reception in the South Barn, owners Carol and Nic Willcocks decided to open the Barn doors to other couples for their day. Always aiming to preserve the fabric and charm of the Barns, whilst creating a setting which provides everything you need they have kept all materials and the layout as close as possible to the original, part of which, they believe, dates back to the 10th century. With an emphasis on sustainability, each year they add a selection of new plants and trees to encourage new wildlife into the surrounding woodland and meadows.

Facilities

Civil Ceremony

Choose between the dedicated West ‘Ceremony’ Barn with three tiers of timber framing, lime plaster walls, natural stone floor, and lime-washed Chiavari chairs, or the Woodland Ceremony Glade (May – September inclusive) with a natural tree aisle, hand-crafted oak ceremony structure, and rustic wood benches. If you opt for the Woodland Glade, the West Barn remains available in case of cold or wet weather. The Church of St Peter & St Paul, Alpheton is located next to the Barns and may be an option for couples seeking a Church wedding (subject to qualifying criteria).

Wedding Reception

The South ‘Reception’ Barn, a former double threshing barn, is perfect for wedding celebrations. Believed to have 10th-century origins, it is the largest and oldest barn and can accommodate both small and large celebrations. The space allows for a wedding breakfast, lounge area, bar, dance floor, and entertainment all in one area, giving guests freedom while keeping everyone together. Long or round tables and chairs are provided, with ample scope for decoration, including draping vintage wood ladder lights and iron hoop lights with flowers, foliage, or ribbons. Full sound system, PA system, lighting (including fairy lights), commercial kitchens, WCs, and heating are included.

Outside Spaces

Alpheton Hall Barns offers a variety of outdoor spaces, including a South-facing drinks terrace, the Confetti Arboretum with heart-shaped confetti area surrounded by long grasses and wildflowers, the Stackyard Garden for drinks and garden games, and the Barns courtyard with a built-in pizza oven and olive tree. Couples and their photographers are welcome to use the wider grounds and gardens for photos. Ample car parking and coach/bus parking and turning are also available.

Catering

Whilst the Barns offer a list of approved caterers and bar providers who are familiar with the space and equipment provided, you are also able to choose your own suppliers (subject to approval) to personalise your day. Self-catering (other than cake) is not permitted.

Accommodation

Whilst there is no onsite accommodation, there is a popular B&B in the village and the Barns are fortunate to be surrounded by some of the best preserved historic wool towns and prettiest villages in Suffolk including Lavenham, Sudbury & Long Melford built when the wool trade was at its peak and these were amongst the richest places in the country. These afford a wide range of B&B and Hotel accommodation to suit all pockets.

During our wedding venue search, we browsed many barns across Essex. And while there were lots of lovely options, we just found that they all felt too similar. On top of that, most came with a long list of rules and additional charges that would’ve forced our big ideas into their mould and pushed us over budget. Thankfully, we found a venue that was the complete opposite.

We wanted somewhere that felt authentic and warm, full of character, with a stunning woodland ceremony area and a back-up option we’d be equally excited about if it rained. We found all that and more at Alpheton Hall Barns.

But it’s not just the space that makes this place special, it’s the people at the heart of it. From the very first visit, Carol and Nic’s passion for weddings was obvious. Unlike so many other venues, they don’t treat it like a business. They simply want your day to be the best it can be and give you the freedom and flexibility to make it truly yours.

From lending us decor and letting us set everything up the day before, creating a bespoke music and light show for our grand entrance as Mr & Mrs, to even driving us in their vintage VW camper to and from the ceremony area, Carol, Nic and their family went above and beyond to help us create our perfect day.

Simply put, we had the absolute best day of our lives and can confidently say we couldn’t have achieved our vision anywhere else but Alpheton Hall Barns. So, if you want a venue unlike any other, and a wedding day that feels truly authentic, wholesome and unique to you, you’ve found your place.

We don’t even know where to begin in thanking Carol and Nic for everything they did to make our wedding so magical. From the very first moment, their kindness, care, and attention to detail put us at ease, and on the day itself, everything felt like a dream.

ABH was absolutely breathtaking, and every little detail was perfect. But more than that, it was the warmth and support from Carol and Nic that made us feel so special. They gave us the gift of being able to truly relax and soak up every precious moment, something we will cherish forever.

Our guests are still talking about how beautiful and seamless the day was. We will carry these memories with us for the rest of our lives, and we are so grateful that it was all made possible by them.

What a day!! We can't thank Carol & Nic enough for our wedding and experience at Alpheton Hall Barns! From the first visit they were warm and enthusiastic, offering lots of ideas and advice to make our day feel special and unique to us. On the lead up they were also great at promptly answering any questions we had. They really know their stuff when it comes to the ins and outs of a wedding, and we felt in such safe hands. Because of this, we were so relaxed throughout our day and were able to really enjoy every moment without worrying about anything - we'll forever be grateful for this!

The venue itself is stunning! Relaxed, rustic and with spaces for guests to move around in, which we loved. The weather was a bit touch and go but Carol & Nic put everything in place to make sure that if the woodland ceremony couldn't happen, the beautiful indoor barn was ready to go. Thankfully we were able to have our dream outdoor ceremony in the end!

There's so much flexibility in how you might decorate the barn, meaning that each wedding can feel unique to each couple. Our guests have raved about it feeling like one of the most joyous and lovely weddings they've been to - and we know that the location will have absolutely contributed to that!

Thank you again Carol & Nic, Alpheton Hall Barns is an absolute gem of a venue!!

  • J&B July 2025

We can’t recommend Alpheton Hall Barns highly enough. Our original venue cancelled our wedding, which left us in a panic, incredibly stressed and unsure what to do next. We viewed several venues, but from the moment we walked around Alpheton Hall Barns and met Carol and Nic, we knew we would be looked after. Their warm, reassuring approach instantly put us at ease. They told us we could still use our existing suppliers, which meant we did not lose the bookings we had already made or the money we had spent. After such a difficult start, we felt very safe in their hands.

Carol and Nic are so welcoming and enthusiastic about helping you celebrate your wedding. They have a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and their input was invaluable. It is clear they genuinely want your guests to have the best time, with thoughtful added features included as standard. For example, there is a confetti balloon for a fun, celebratory moment. They also offer the option of an epic entrance to your wedding breakfast, which we decided to adapt as our entrance to the first dance instead. Nic was fantastic at working out the logistics for this, and it worked perfectly.

What stood out most was their flexibility and determination to make the day exactly how you want it. We had planned an outdoor ceremony, but the morning brought heavy rain. We had resigned ourselves to moving indoors, which would have been beautiful as the barn itself is stunning. However, Carol and Nic reassured us that the ceremony could still go ahead outside, and it did. Their confidence and knowledge of the local weather meant we had the ceremony we had dreamed of, something we do not think many other venues would have gone to such effort to make happen.

The venue itself is breathtaking. The barn is beautiful on its own and does not need much to make it personal. Fairy lights are included as standard and look magical. There are also plenty of varied photo opportunities, with lots of different backdrops to give you a lovely selection of photographs, which is so important. The facilities give you the flexibility to make your day as simple or as detailed as you wish. We did not necessarily do everything in a traditional order. For example, we wanted to cut our wedding cake much later in the evening, which was not an issue at all. If you want to do things your own way, that is really not a problem here.

The 48 hour hire period was a huge benefit, allowing us to set up the day before and making the wedding day itself far less stressful. We could relax and enjoy the morning knowing everything was ready, with our wedding party just adding a few finishing touches.

If you are looking for a stunning venue with a team who truly care about making your wedding unique to you, we would wholeheartedly recommend Alpheton Hall Barns.

  • S&E June 2025

Wow - where do we begin? From the moment we visited Alpheton Hall Barns - we completely fell in love with the venue. The barn is full of character and charm, surrounded by stunning stackyard garden, open fields and even a confetti meadow. We just knew it was the one. Carol and Nic were absolutely amazing from start to finish. They helped bring our special day to life with creativity and care, including a brilliant list of recommended suppliers that made the planning process so much easier. They really helped our day feel truly personalised. Carol and Nic were so relaxed and friendly on the set up day and the day of the wedding - full of laughter! The day itself ran incredibly smoothly. They were always nearby, ensuring everything flowed perfectly. One of the most special moments was being directed to a quiet room with a bottle of champagne ready for us to pop open straight after the ceremony - it gave us a very special moment as newlyweds. Another clear highlight was our entrance to the reception where Nic organised a fantastic light display with a smoke machine. It really made a fantastic atmosphere to kick off our reception. We'll always be incredibly grateful to Carol and Nic for going above and beyond to make our day so unforgettable. So many of our guests said the same - it was truly magical.

  • E&C May 2025

We cannot recommend AHB highly enough. The owners Nic and Carol were so amazing to work with on our special day. What stood out to us about AHB was the venue's flexibility, which gave us the option to really make the day our own. As we were doing a vegetarian wedding, having the option to choose our own caterer was really important to us. In the lead up, Carol was super responsive and patient, replying promptly to my one million emails. Additionally, being able to decorate everything ourselves the day before meant we could make sure everything was perfect, rather than needing to pay someone else to sort everything on the morning of. Nic and Carol are also really generous, there are countless wonderful props and decorations available for use at the barns for free, and we made use of lots of them. They also have some unique features which you can use to make the day really special, such as the chalkboard photobooth, and the dancefloor confetti balloon. On top of all of this, the venue is stunningly beautiful. We loved the magic of being in such a historic barn, and being able to get married in the beautiful woodland surrounded by birdsong was so amazing. I am also a big fan of their many guineafowl which you may see wandering about! On the day, both Nic and Carol's many years of experience really showed and they were so helpful, making everything run smoothly. Stunning venue, magnificent coordinators, can't recommend enough, 10/10, wish we could do it all over again!

  • M&E May 2025

Alpheton Hall Barns was the perfect venue for us. We had our ceremony in the woodland area, drinks reception in the garden and dinner in the main hall for 95 guests. Nic and Carol were brilliant throughout, always answering our questions promptly, helping to think of little touches that made the day run more smoothly, and they have so many little tricks up their sleeves that really made the day go exactly as we dreamed.

They really do go above and beyond to make sure everyone has a brilliant day. They help advise on anything you need. They also run several open-days throughout the year, which were so good as you get to meet all their preferred suppliers, many of which ended up catering for our big day.

We can't think Nic and Carol enough for their help. The uniqueness and beauty of the venue is really exceptional, and we felt privileged to have our wedding there. It really was the best day of our lives, and Nic and Carol were a big part of making that happen. Thank you both so much!
