History

At the close of the 19th century, Torquay became extremely popular with the rich and privileged of Europe, and it was during this opulent time that a noble Russian family, the Romanoffs, arrived and built the stunning edifice, which they called Villa Syracusa.

Down the years, the villa had many influential, prestigious visitors, including Edward, Prince of Wales. The Russian Royal Family were frequent guests, visiting the Romanoffs with Count Gregoire Stroganoff and Countess Alexandra Tolstoy, to name just a few.

The Ascot Suite

The recently refurbished Ascot Suite successfully blends the modern with the traditional, and effortlessly conveys the bright and airy atmosphere that is so much an integral part of being at the seaside. The room can host a moderately-sized formal wedding breakfast for up to 50 guests, rising to a capacity of 70 for an evening reception party. The suite is also ideal for civil ceremonies.

The Romanoff Restaurant

Named after the family who commissioned the Villa Syracusa in the mid-19th century, this elegant room showcases impressive chandeliers and large bay windows which command beautiful sea views. The Romanoff Restaurant is ideal for larger occasions.
