History

The Grade II-listed and beautifully restored country hostelry was originally constructed in 1838 to be a communal social facility for resident workers at the nearby Tyntesfield Estate. Now nearly two centuries later, the kindly country inn still passes muster as a welcome retreat and vital social hub for locals and visitors alike.

Very much the local landmark, the prominent peaked triangular architecture is fairly typical of the mid-to-late 19th century, with intricate woodwork and imposing roofs extending to the interior. It is thanks to the grand scale of the building that The Battleaxes boasts such a large capacity and versatility for wedding parties.

Facilities

For civil ceremonies, the wood-panelled Clubroom is both idyllic and sublime. With its large open bay windows flooding light into the chamber from the polished wooden floors to the high-vaulted ceilings, it is an impressive backdrop for every couple's special moment. The Clubroom also serves well for wedding breakfasts.

Meanwhile the Lounge Bar/Restaurant area can be utilised for a canapés and drinks reception following your ceremony, with its commanding views across the gorgeous Somerset countryside. Additionally, the space can be cleared for a disco and dancefloor area for the evening festivities. On the other hand, the cosier bar downstairs known as The Shindig caters effectively for a smaller, more intimate party, and can be used for an after-hours disco.

Clubroom (Ceremony, Formal Reception) - 50-90 Guests

Lounge Bar (Informal Reception Party) - up to 250 Guests

Catering

Experienced chefs at The Battleaxes prepare and serve some of the finest and freshest locally-sourced foods found in Somerset, with sample menus available for all seasons. One of these lavish rooms serves as the complimentary bridal suite included with a wedding package at the venue, and each one is equipped with ensuite bathroom, flatscreen TV and iPod docking station.

Not really sure where to start with explaining why I love this venue so much! I recently married at the Battleaxes and it was perfect. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was immense, delicious and a major talking point! The staff were smiley, helpful beyond belief and they made everything seem so effortless. The decor is wicked, a really different place to tie the knot and this was really important to us! We're so happy that we will be able to return here year on year to celebrate our anniversary and enjoy even more delicious food! Thank you to all who helped to make our day perfect... It really was!

My wife and I had our wedding there at the end of October. The venue was fantastic and the staff could not have been more helpful! The food was amazing and our guests could not praise it enough. The quality of the food was some of the best I have ever had and we know we will be returning for more. Our reception was held in the Shindig and it was perfect.

If I could fault it in anyway, it would be that the day had to finish! Would I recommend this marvelous little gem...absolutely! Lotty and the team went above and beyond our expectations, so a massive thank you for playing such a huge part in our big day.
