History

The Smedmores owned the estate until 1391, when it was joined to the Clavell family.

Originally, the estate was devoted to mining shale, from which in later years gas was extracted to light street lamps in Paris. The Clavells were then put out of business by Sir Robert Mansel – whose relative John would eventually inherit the estate in 1830.

The house was built in 1610 and was over looked by the famous Clavell Tower which was though to be used to signal to smugglers, who brought in brandy to the next bay.

Facilities

Smedmore House offers three large rooms in which you can host your civil ceremony. The Front Room, The Drawing Room and The Dining Room all have panelled walls and antique furnishings, large windows with exceptional views and open fireplaces.

A summerhouse is also available for your ceremony, and a marquee can be erected in the grounds, considerably extending the venue's capacity for an evening reception.

Explore the grounds in any spare moments and you won't be disappointed, with two flower gardens, orchards, a Mediterranean Garden and a beautiful walk through the woods, lined with sculptures and exotic plants, all the way down to Kimmeridge Bay.

And why not turn your wedding into a weekend-long affair? Boat-trips, wind-surfing, diving, fishing, shooting, falconry, horse-riding and paragliding can also be arranged.

Catering

Chefs, kitchen and waiting staff can be hired for your wedding, with the focus on fresh, local produce and talented cooks – and don't forget the award-winning Dorset wines! For their full list of recommended suppliers, please contact Smedmore House directly.
