Located within convenient reach of London on the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire border, Notley Abbey is a truly remarkable and characterful exclusive use wedding venue. What was once an Augustinian monastery is now a beautiful country house that can be all yours for your special day.

The house is licensed to hold civil ceremonies both inside and out and has space for 172 day guests and 250 evening guests, allowing you to completely take over the stunning house and grounds. As a Bijou venue, it also has a dedicated Wedding Planning Management Team at your disposal.

Originally constructed in the 12th century by the Earl of Buckinghamshire, Notley Abbey was used as an Augustinian monastery and was visited by Henry IV and Henry V before ultimately being dissolved in 1538 by Henry VIII, after which time, most of the Abbey fell to ruins. Test.

After being restored to some extent in the 19th century, Notley Abbey's next notable owners were actors Lawrence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in 1944. Under their ownership, the house hosted lavish Hollywood parties in the same rooms where monks once gathered for prayer.

However, it sadly fell into disrepair once again until 2006, when it was purchased by Bijou Wedding Venues and was lovingly restored to its former glory.

The Abbot's Hall

Originally the main room of the Abbot's residence, and later the sitting room of Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, the Abbot's Hall is a perfect space for more intimate occasions. Its wooden beams and 14th century fireplace add character, while its massive windows add plenty of gorgeous, natural light.

Civil ceremony capacity - 100 guests
Wedding breakfast capacity - 60 guests

The Monks' Refectory

With its foundations built in 1162, this spectacular stone barn space lends itself wonderfully to larger weddings. Its large windows give it a light airiness for ceremonies, and, when candlelit for evening banquets, it brings to mind the monks who would have originally dined there nearly a century ago.

Civil ceremony capacity - 172 guests
Wedding breakfast capacity - 172 guests

The Walled Garden

The Walled Garden provides an al fresco ceremony space like no other. Sitting on the original site of the Abbey, some of the wall is actually constructed from its ruins. A nook in the wall provides an aesthetic focal point, and the space easily accommodates weddings of all sizes.

Civil ceremony capacity - 172 guests

The Reception

For evening receptions, up to 250 guests can be accommodated throughout the house.

Whether you choose to keep your guests in the Monks' Refectory for a barn-style wedding celebration, or to adopt a house-party feel by opening up further rooms, all of Notley Abbey's stunning period facilities are at your disposal. After all, it is all yours!

Bijou's in-house team of expert chefs will ensure that your banqueting experience is unforgettable and delicious. They will work with you and your partner to create a bespoke menu, and will invite you to Notley Abbey for a menu tasting. All dietary requirements are happily accommodated.

With nine beautiful, period bedrooms, including a luxurious bridal suite benefitting from stunning views, Notley Abbey allows you to prepare for your day in the house itself, and can accommodate your nearest and dearest overnight. A range of hotels for your other guests are available nearby.
