Widely thought of as the very epitome of a country house, the hundred-acre Maunsel Estate has long played an important role in the economic wellbeing of the local area. Situated within luscious countryside near North Petherton, Somerset, this venerable and fascinating building exudes abundant charm on a variety of levels, and features its very own Saxon Chapel.

With its roots in the 13th century, Maunsel House boasts not only a wealth of historic and visually exciting features, but also an extremely welcoming and down-to-earth atmosphere. Bask in the ultimate in archetypal countryside weddings - sit by roaring log fires, lose yourself strolling around duckponds, and have your guests toast your health, wealth and happiness on the sprawling lawn. All of these simple delights can be exclusively yours for your big day.

Mentioned in The Domesday Book, Maunsel House still retains surviving structural elements predating the 13th century. Since that time it has undergone a prodigious number of renovations or reworkings, especially throughout the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, to arrive at its present-day state.

Renowned poet, literary author and polymath Geoffrey Chaucer was known to have taken up residence within Maunsel House during his occupation as Deputy Forester for the Royal Forest of North Petherton.

Today the mansion is home to Sir Benjamin Slade, Maunsel House's Baron, whose family has occupied the estate since the 18th century - you will observe a number of references to the family history throughout the house.

Maunsel House is licensed to host civil marriage and partnership ceremonies as well as wedding receptions, adding to this exclusive venue's all-inclusive appeal.

The magnificent Regency Ballroom can seat up to 102 guests for your ceremony, and features an array of historical portraits and a set of ceiling-high French windows, which when opened can allow the room's capacity to extend to 120 for receptions (utilising a marquee outside), and leads out to a magnificent ancient cedar tree.

The Bar is reckoned to be the earliest wing of the building (pre-Domesday), featuring charismatic grey flagstone floors, and houses an impressive, atmospheric collection of the various weaponry of the Slade family collected over the years. It all makes a fine ambience for your guests to get stuck into a selection of top-quality ales and wines.

Other facilities of which you can take advantage are the intimate Dining Room, which seats up to 26 guests, and the Library.

Roofed Pergola In The Walled Garden

Able to seat up to 200 for alfresco-style dining, the delightful outside space that is the Pergola is perfect for those sunny, summery afternoons. Imagine yourselves and your guests chatting and toasting with golden champagne in the amber evening sun, accompanied by the sweet intermingling smells of climbing jasmine, honeysuckle, rose and wisteria. Dine by the orchard and dovecote, to the (sometimes rather vocal) accompaniment of peacocks, fantailed doves and rare-breed chickens.

Maunsel House's bandstand is licensed to host civil ceremonies - so you can hold your entire wedding celebration outdoors!

Maunsel House can now offer luxurious accommodation for your wedding party. You can choose from a selection of thirteen handsome and traditionally-designed bedrooms in the house, from four of the brand-new rooms in the South Wing or from the estate's three nearby cottages.

Luxury In The Mansion

Many of the Maunsel House's bedrooms come complete with four-poster beds, and a number of other lavish facilities ideal for pampering. Add to this luxurious soft bath robes, flowers and fresh fruit, scrumptious biscuits, chocolate and tea and coffee-making facilities with a difference (fine bone china), and you have a great room to 'crash' in after the exhausting celebrations of your special day.

All of this contributes to the inescapable overall impression that Maunsel House is absolutely perfect as an all-inclusive and exclusive wedding venue.

The Chapel

Maunsel House's 100-acre estate includes one of the smallest churches in Britain, the medieval Church of St Michael. This beautiful, bijou, candlelit chapel can seat between 40-50 guests for a religious marriage ceremony. As this is a CofE church, permissions as to whether you are entitled to tie the knot in this building are subject to the usual restrictions, ie your residential or other connections with the local parish.
