The earliest known record of Mapperton Gardens appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. The manor was therein accredited to the Sheriff of Somerset, and subsequently reverted to only four families, descending through the female line. It now belongs to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich as their private family home.

Although many of the original and early features remain, over the years much of the manor house has been modified to reflect changes in fashion, but it still retains great character and charm.

Both house and gardens have frequently been deployed as film and television locations, with ITV's Broadchurch filmed just a few moments away. The gardens were notably used in an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel 'Far From The Madding Crowd'.

As Mapperton Gardens is privileged to maintain a civil wedding licence, a variety of areas are available to host your ceremony, including an onsite church to hold a religious marriage service.

The Gardens

These idyllic gardens are Grade II*-listed. Steeped in romance and tranquillity, they represent a perfect photo opportunity. Your guests can explore the gardens, whilst you and your partner take a moment to absorb the day; and there is also an opportunity for a drinks and canapés reception next to the subtropical Orangery.

The Garden Pavilion

If 'natural' and, 'rustic' are words that readily spring to mind when you think about the theme you have envisaged for your wedding, The Garden Pavilion is the place for you. Shrouded in abundant foliage and sprawling green lawns, the stone pavilion provides a quaint place for an English Country Garden wedding ceremony.

The Croquet Lawn

Mapperton's croquet lawn stretches out over the house gardens. The tall hedgerows shelter the lawn, making it a beautiful place for a wedding marquee to be erected, seating up to 400 guests.

The Sawmill

Filled with rustic charm, this Hamstone building retains many of its original features, including a wooden floor and the saw bench. Adjacent is a perfect location for a smaller marquee, seating up to 70 guests for the ceremony and 50 for the wedding breakfast.

All Saints Church

As well as holding a civil ceremony licence, Mapperton Gardens incorporate an onsite church. Dating back to the 12th century the golden Hamstone church with characterful stained glass window is ideal for any couples who wish to receive a religious blessing.
