We will be\nsticking with the UK for now; and even here, the differences between English\nand Scottish laws are considerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/where-can-i-get-married\/where-can-i-get-married-image-2.jpg\" alt=\"where can i get married\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just to be clear,\nwe\u2019re going to be talking about the legal bits. There are definite restrictions\non where you can host your official (legal) ceremony &#8211; the space must hold a\nmarital licence for one. The reception is simply a party that can be held\npretty much anywhere you like. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, hosting\nyour ceremony and reception in the same place makes coordination much simpler.\nYou don\u2019t have to transport guests to and from locations meaning the order of\nthe day flows nicely. This is obviously slightly different if you planning a religious\nceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Religious Marriage Ceremonies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can legally\nmarry during a religious wedding ceremony that is held at premises approved by\nthe local authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approved religious\nceremony venues include a church of the Church of England, Church in Wales,\nChurch of Scotland, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian Church, Roman Catholic\nChurch, a Synagogue or a Society of Friends\u2019 Meeting House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/where-can-i-get-married\/where-can-i-get-married-image-3.jpg\" alt=\"where can i get married\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are legal requirements of a religious ceremony; these are all unique to your faith. For example, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Church of England (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yourchurchwedding.org\/article\/legal-requirements\/ \" target=\"_blank\">Church of England<\/a> offer special guidelines on marriage in the church if you have been divorced. The best thing to do is discuss the proceedings with your local parish or priest. They will be able to advise you on readings, psalms and hymns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Civil Partnership Laws in England and Wales<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until 2012, all marriages that took place in England and Wales had to occur between the hours of 8am and 6pm. These laws have now been relaxed, so brides and grooms can arrange a marriage ceremony at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In England and Wales, by law a wedding ceremony must occur <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"inside a building or a fixed structure (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/approval-of-premises-for-civil-marriage-or-civil-partnership \" target=\"_blank\">inside a building or a fixed structure<\/a>. This means that unfortunately, in England and Wales, you\u2019re not legally allowed to marry outside. Historically, this is as a precautionary measure to prevent the marriage register from becoming wet! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/where-can-i-get-married\/where-can-i-get-married-image-4.jpg\" alt=\"where can i get married\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some local\nauthorities will allow you to sign the register indoors, and then continue the\nceremony outside at a registered venue, but again it\u2019s always best to\ndouble-check your own county\u2019s interpretation of protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your marriage certificate\nmust be signed by you, your partner and your two witnesses to be legally\nbinding. As a result, your intimate ceremony between you and your partner must\nbear two witnesses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Civil Ceremony Locations in England and Wales<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Civil ceremonies\ncommonly take place at a local authority\u2019s registry office, and you can legally\nbe married in this way at any local authority\u2019s designated ceremony room. Most\nauthorities make sure that their ceremony rooms are in pretty locations, with\neasy access to a garden where photographs can be taken afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you\ncan hold a civil wedding ceremony at any licensed approved premises in England and\nWales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approved premises\ncan be found in public and private buildings, often in picturesque locations\nsuch as country hotels or stately homes. Although any other building that the\nlocal authority deems a suitable and appropriate place in which to be married\ncan hold a licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/where-can-i-get-married\/where-can-i-get-married-image-5.jpg\" alt=\"where can i get married\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have your\nheart set on getting married outside, some venues have a beautiful pagoda or\neven a rustic fixed structure that the happy couple simply need to stand under.\nThere are also beach venues boasting ceremony licences in the UK. So you can\nget married with your sand between your toes, just don\u2019t be surprised if you\nsay your vows under a fixed structure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marquees aren\u2019t licenced\nfor civil ceremonies because they aren\u2019t fixed structures. A marriage approval for\nyour back garden is very unlikely. Ceremony licenced spaces must be open to the\ngeneral public, which would be a tricky one to argue in the case of your back\ngarden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Civil Partnership in Scotland<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mygov.scot\/getting-married\/\ufeff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"In Scotland (opens in a new tab)\">In Scotland<\/a>, however, the situation is very different. This means that it doesn\u2019t have to occur under a fixed structure at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you\u2019re dreaming\nof a woodland wedding, a ceremony on a sweeping cliff edge or a simple,\nintimate gathering in your back garden, Scotland may be the answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Humanist Wedding Ceremony<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Humanist wedding ceremonies\naren\u2019t legally recognised in England and Wales. If you\u2019re dreaming of a hand\nfasting ceremony or a pagan wedding, you\u2019ll have to organise the legal stuff beforehand.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Scotland only,\nyou can legally marry during a Humanist wedding ceremony.
