The 1999 film <em>Runaway Bride<\/em>\nstars Julia Roberts as the titular commitment-phobe who left three fianc\u00e9s at\nthe altar. Opposite her, Richard Gere stars as a columnist desperate to work\nher out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-wedding-dresses-in-runaway-bride\/Richard_Gere.jpg\" alt=\"Runaway Bride Richard Gere\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The two\nacted with each other some years previously; they played escort and business\nman in <em>Pretty Woman<\/em> in 1990.\nMoreover, Roberts may have been the perfect actress for the role in this film,\nas she left fianc\u00e9 Kiefer Sutherland three days before their 1991 wedding. In\nthe film, Ike forces Maggie to face her identity crisis by highlighting her cooking\nmethod of eggs. (As it appears, her favourite type of eggs is always her fianc\u00e9\u2019s\nfavourite.) Ultimately they fall for one another. Maggie finally finds her\nperfect man, and her perfect dress!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we\nrarely get a chance to look at so many dresses at once! However, we are going\nto focus on the one that finally made her stick with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>The Plot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Maggie\nCarpenter is many times a bride, never a wife! She always runs away from the\naltar before she ties the knot. When Ike, a columnist in New York, hears about\nthis story, he writes an article which gets slammed by Maggie for\nmisinformation. He is fired and decides to travel to Maryland to visit the infamous\nbride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon meeting him, she is horrified to discover that he is the man who wrote the piece about her. However, her family like him so eventually she decides to give him the true story, for a price. She is engaged, again, to an American football coach called Bob. Eventually, at the wedding rehearsal, Maggie kisses Ike and they admit their feelings for each other. Another wedding is called off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Runaway Bride - Trailer\" width=\"770\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ay8QC6tL7k0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While\neverything seems happily ever after, Maggie flees the altar at her wedding to\nIke. Ike moves back to New York and Maggie tries to discover who she is,\nwithout a man. Finally, she turns up at Ike\u2019s door and proposes to him. They\nmarry in a ceremony on a hillside, a very different affair to the large\nweddings she previously had. Meanwhile, all their friends and family rejoice that\nthe runaway bride is now happily married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>The Dress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, Maggie and Ike actually tie the knot in the final\nscene! Their ceremony is an intimate one, out in the open. There is an\natmosphere of carefree happiness between the newlyweds, with no large and fancy\noccasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camera pans across autumnal leaves on the\nground and we see Maggie slowly approaching to say her vows.<strong> <\/strong>Ike is dapper in a three piece\nsuit and she is wearing a beautiful white wedding dress.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/y9BBw0dnG7Y\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Her classic satin off-the-shoulder ball gown features a scallop-edged sweetheart neckline that is elegantly low-cut. The bodice clings to her figure and features intricate lace detailing. The romantic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/wedding-dress-styles-ultimate-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"A-line (opens in a new tab)\">A-line<\/a> gown has a long court train which sweeps across the leafy ground. The back of the dress features a line of elegant, covered buttons down the centre. We can imagine it would not have been very easy to run away in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\ncarries a small bouquet which appears to feature wild, autumnal blooms and\nplenty of foliage. It is tied together with long silk ribbon which almost\ntouches the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-wedding-dresses-in-runaway-bride\/Wedding-dresses-in-film-runaway-bride-image-2.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic wedding dresses in the film runaway bride\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Maggie\u2019s\nhair tumbles down her back in bouncy loose curls, reminiscent of Roberts\u2019 role\nin <em>Pretty Woman<\/em>. The hairstyle emphasises\nher carefree, happy nature now that she\u2019s found the perfect man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couple are then seen romantically frolicking in a rolling field on horseback after their vows. Then, they gallop off side-by-side for the ultimate romantic, fairy tale ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>The Designer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfilm\u2019s costume designer was Albert Wolsky, who also designed the costumes for\nGrease and You\u2019ve Got Mail. However, while he designed the other four wedding\ndresses, the final one came from the rack at Saks Fifth Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dress was from designer <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Amsale Aberra (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/amsale.com\/pages\/the-designer\" target=\"_blank\">Amsale Aberra<\/a>. She was born in Ethiopia and moved to America for college. She started to design and make her own clothes as she didn\u2019t have enough money to buy them. Amsale then started to consider a career in fashion design and went back to university. She earned a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Amsale Spring 2014 Bridal Collection\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vjJudHCscD4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Frustrated by the apparent lack of classic, timeless wedding gowns, she designed her own. She launched her own label in 1986 and started to design custom wedding dresses from her garment-district loft. Shortly after opening, bridal retailer Kleinfield chanced on an advertisement she posted in <em>Modern Bride<\/em>, and bought her entire collection!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amsale Bridal\ncontinued to go from strength to strength, and a flagship store opened on\nMadison Avenue in 2001. With the motto \u201cForever Modern\u201d, the label\u2019s gowns are\nknown for their classic elegance and understated adornment, like handcrafted\nbeading or a blue sash at the waist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Down the Aisle in Amsale | Day in the Life\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eOU1LsofSGw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Amsale Aberra was twice featured on Ebony magazine&#8217;s \u201cPower 150\u201d list of the 150 most influential African Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>The Other Four<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, we couldn\u2019t just leave without at least mentioning <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/article\/1999\/08\/06\/style-runaway-bride\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"the other dresses (opens in a new tab)\">the other dresses<\/a>. There are four other weddings dresses that make at least a brief cameo. As we mentioned before, Wolsky designed the other dresses. He said there was not enough time to find other designers and thus made them himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first dress required <em>three<\/em> copies because of all the stunts the character was due to make. Julia Roberts decided to add daisies to her hair when wearing this crocheted hippie dress. At the wedding to Dead Head Gill Chavez, she bounces on a trampoline before getting cold feet, vaulting over a fence and escaping on the back of a motorbike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-wedding-dresses-in-runaway-bride\/Julia_Roberts.jpg\" alt=\"Runaway Bride, Julia Roberts\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The second wedding, to Brian who later becomes a priest, is big and traditional. The train was very long, to accommodate the pageboy who was dragged back up the aisle. It was hand embroidered and perfect for a big church wedding. There was a <em>lot<\/em> of lace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maggie\u2019s third wedding is\nto entomologist George Swilling. She comes up the aisle on horseback wearing an\noff-the-shoulder cloud-like gown and veil secured by a wreath of flowers. It is\nmade of tulle fabric, and four copies were made. As the veil flies behind her\nas she flees on the horse, Wolsky had to cut it to size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-wedding-dresses-in-runaway-bride\/runaway.jpg\" alt=\"Runaway Bride\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The final failed wedding\ndress was set for two different weddings. Firstly, to Bob the sports coach,\nthen secondly to Ike. As Wolsky described, \u201cIt\u2019s as close as you can get to a Vera\nWang without it being a Vera Wang.\u201d There were plenty of stunts needed for this\ndress, too, as Maggie escapes her groom by climbing out a window and jumping on\na FedEx van, so there was a spare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Which is\nyour favourite dress?
