Whether they are looking for a theme, or just interested in the\norigin of traditions, we are always happy to oblige. Today we thought we would\ndive back to wartime and explore bridal fashion of World War One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/inspire-me\/WW1%20Brides\/stijn-swinnen-259744-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Fashion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fashion and dresses in World War I broadly leant towards the\nart nouveau movement. Out went restrictive corsets and in came the modern bra. Free\nflowing lines and freedom of movement became popular in clothing, as did military\nstyle garments. During the start of the 1910s, dress designs had a horizontal\nlayered look and empire waists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Edwardian era officially ended with the death of Edward VII in 1910, many consider the period to continue until the start of the war. That being said, the Edwardian silhouette consisted of a blouson bodice, an A-line skirt and cinched in waist. Later, a popular style of tunic dresses, square necklines and capped sleeves also became in vogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/WWI-brides\/paquin5.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While fashions in the workplace became more masculine and practical, fashions at home tended to the feminine. As men came home on leave, girls felt it was important to look good and keep morale up. &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"War crinoline (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardianpromenade.com\/fashion\/wwi-wednesday-war-crinoline\/\" target=\"_blank\">War crinoline<\/a>&#8220;, as it was dubbed, fell out of fashion as everyone realised the war was not over by Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Designers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There were many designers who were changing the <a href=\"https:\/\/bellatory.com\/fashion-industry\/Women-and-Fashions-of-the-World-War-I-Era-Clothing-of-1914-1920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"forward face of fashion (opens in a new tab)\">forward face of fashion<\/a>. While previously only royalty and the wealthiest were dressed to the nines, now more of the public could see. The war brought about a quick decline in the availability of fabric, and dresses became more practical than fashionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Paul Poiret<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Poiret reached his peak in the years leading up to the First World War. He is credited for bringing Oriental fashion to the Western market, and also for phasing out the corset. A dress of his style even appears in the first series of <em>Downton Abbey<\/em>, as Sybil\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/glamourdaze.com\/2012\/10\/downton-abbey-fashion-lady-sybil-paul-poiret-and-those-harem-pants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"new harem dress (opens in a new tab)\">new harem dress<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/WWI-brides\/poiet2.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oriental style that he brought to the market influenced\nboth shape and colour. Colours could become richer and were getting cheaper to\nproduce. Meanwhile, lightweight fabrics remained cool on hot days and sleeve\nlength started to vary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Jeanne Paquin<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Paquin became a trailblazer for fashions of the time, and\nturned heads for being a woman. She loved to use colours, with black and red\nbeing prominent in her work. She also recognised use of the Paris Metro when\ndesigning, and as such made gowns that were comfortable foremost. She designed\ncountless wedding dresses that would have been at the height of fashion, and\nusing colours other than white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/WWI-brides\/paquin3.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Lucile<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Lady Duff-Gordon, known professionally as Lucille, was a\nleading British designer. She hosted the first fashion parades and gave her\ndress with highly evocative names. She called these \u201cemotional gowns\u201d.&nbsp; Some of her dresses now belong to the V&amp;A\nMuseum in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/WWI-brides\/lucile4.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have heard of Lady Duff-Gordon; she was a passenger\non the Titanic and escaped on an early, half-empty lifeboat with her husband.\nHer character appeared in the 1997 film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Charles Frederick Worth<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Worth died before the turn of the century, his work\ninfluenced younger designers. He has been dubbed the \u201cfather of haute couture\u201d.\nEmpress Eug\u00e9nie of France was one of his most famous clients and her tastes\ninfluenced his work. For example, in the 1880s he created a dress with a\nshorter hemline, so the Empress could walk without tripping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/WWI-brides\/worth3.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although he was born in England, he moved to Paris at the\nage of 20 and started to build a reputation soon after. Therefore, he was at\nthe forefront of the modern design movement and had influence on both sides of\nThe Channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Marriages<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">If you are a fan of the Channel Four programme <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Married at First Sight (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/married-at-first-sight\" target=\"_blank\">Married at First Sight<\/a><\/em>, then you wouldn\u2019t believe that actually this was a common occurrence during wartime era. Many young couples became engaged without even meeting face to face and courtship exchanges were primarily through letter writing. The hasty acts were perhaps due to the fear of being a single woman at this time, and the ingrained view that women\u2019s prime destination in life was to marry and have children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/WWI-brides\/lucil5.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the war, many marriages were planned very\nquickly, either before the groom went away to fight, or whilst he was home on\nleave. Many brides had no option but to borrow a wedding gown to wear on the\nday. Others, with the help of their families, would save every single penny to\nensure that they were still able to marry wearing the dress of their dreams. The\nlimitation of resources meant that wedding gowns were simplistic, but this is\nnot to say that they weren\u2019t romantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Wartime Bridalwear<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The devastating effects of the war meant that women were\noutnumbering the young men. Hence, when a marriage was possible, the young\nwomen and their families jumped at the chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wedding dresses were feminine, modest, free flowing and with\nan abundance of lace. Brides accessorised their bridal looks with capped veils\nand a bouquet of fresh traditional flowers. Makeup during the early twentieth\ncentury was a natural and simplistic look, consisting of small pots of rouge,\nface creams, and blotting papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/WWI-brides\/paquin6.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there was no one bridal style, mainly due to the\nfact that dresses were reworn and reworked. The formal suits we worn by some brides\nmay be explained by the likelihood that these women couldn\u2019t afford a wedding\ngown at this difficult time. Either way, a romantic vision was still achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certainly, the elaborate gowns created by Poiret and co were\nnot the norm for brides of the day. Nevertheless, these gowns are what we think\nof when we consider the period. This is most likely due to the fact that\nweddings between the higher classes were more heavily documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Downton Abbey\nBridalwear<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning to the fashions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/downton-abbey-themed-wedding-dress-inspiration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Downton Abbey (opens in a new tab)\">Downton Abbey<\/a> in wartime, there are three more demure weddings that occur. These more accurately define what brides would have worn at their weddings. Anna wed Mr Bates in a simple white blouse with a blue skirt and matching hat. Mrs Hughes wears a purple dress, and a coat borrowed from Cora, for her marriage to Mr Carson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Highclere.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Wartime Brides\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Downton moment that most encapsulates wartime\nbrides is Daisy\u2019s wedding to William, on his deathbed. She wears her best\ndress, which is floral with long sleeves.
