After just\nsix years in the industry, <em>High Society <\/em>proved\nto be Grace\u2019s last picture. MGM released the film in 1956, shortly before her\nreal-life marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>High Society<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The story of <em>High Society<\/em> is based on a film of sixteen years\u2019 previously, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Philadelphia Story (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0032904\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Philadelphia Story<\/a><\/em>. This starred Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart and received six Academy Awards nominations, winning two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"High Society Official Trailer #1 - Frank Sinatra Movie (1956) HD\" width=\"770\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jU9SfpVOuSQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>High Society<\/em>, released in 1956 by MGM, is a musical remake of this original story. Beloved Grace Kelly plays Tracy Samantha Lord, a divorced socialite who is set to marry a boring businessman. Ex-husband CK Dexter Haven (Bing Crosby) is a jazz musician who remains in love with her. As Tracy continues her engagement with George (John Lund), a magazine is desperate to uncover embarrassing information about her father. They send a reporter, Mike Connor (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/iconic-wedding-dresses-mia-farrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Frank Sinatra (opens in a new tab)\">Frank Sinatra<\/a>) who also then falls for Tracy. After a night of drinking, she goes swimming with Mike and is discovered by George. He calls off the wedding but the guests have already arrived. Before Tracy has a chance to announce the bad news, Dexter proposes and she realises where her heart is. She accepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-wedding-dresses-film-high-society\/kellycrosby.jpg\" alt=\"High Society Grace Kelly Bing Crosby Frank Sinatra\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The music in the film is performed by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Louis Armstrong (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/top-10-swing-jazz-wedding-songs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Louis Armstrong<\/a> and his band. The music and lyrics were written by Cole Porter, a famous Broadway and film composer. Late in production, Sinatra ask that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7kq1JQUhwVQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"\u201cWell, Did You Evah!\u201d (opens in a new tab)\">\u201cWell, Did You Evah!\u201d<\/a>, a song from one of Porter\u2019s previous musicals, be added to the film so that he could sing onscreen with his idol, Bing Crosby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>The Dress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the\ntime of filming, this was one of the most beautiful wedding dresses audiences\nhad ever seen. Of course, it was to be eclipsed by the dress she wore to her\nreal wedding to Prince Rainier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/R0NNReqWVVw?t=114\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The dress\nwas made of silk organza, a very fine fabric notoriously difficult to work\nwith. The dress was vaguely pinky yellow in colour, decorated with floral\nembroidery. It was calf length and an A line shape with a very narrow waist and\nlong, puffy sleeves. It featured a white underdress with an exaggerated\nsweetheart neckline under a sheer, deep V neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nembroidered flowers on the bodice and skirt matched with a small bouquet of\nflowers which Grace wore at her waist attached to a pink ribbon belt. In work\nthat would have taken seamstresses hours, the embroidery is all perfectly symmetrical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-wedding-dresses-film-high-society\/dress.jpg\" alt=\"High Society Grace Kelly's wedding dress\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace\u2019s\ncharacter Tracy wore the dress with a floppy wide-brimmed white hat which\nfeatured layers of fabric and tulle on top. She also wore a pair of\nwrist-length white gloves which complemented the demure outfit perfectly. In\nterms of her hair, she wore it neatly pinned back in curls at the nape of her\nneck. Her makeup was subtle and soft with a bright, feminine red lipstick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is\nimportant to note that the dress was not white. Although this was by far the\nmost popular colour for bridal dresses to be at this time, it was not seen as\nappropriate for a second-time bride. White was deemed a colour of virtue, and\nnot suitable for a woman who had already had a wedding night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>The Designer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Rose was a prolific Hollywood designer. Not\nonly did she dress the stars on screen, but she often created outfits for their\nreal lives, too. As for Grace Kelly, it was Helen who designed her stunning and\niconic real wedding dress. However, she designed this, the one in the film <em>High Society<\/em>, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen is credited with designing clothes for more than a hundred films. She won two Oscars and was nominated for eight more. She designed gowns for Twentieth Century Fox before someone offered her a job at MGM. Four years later, she became the chief costume designer and produced dresses for all the biggest stars. She even made <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Elizabeth Taylor (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/iconic-wedding-dresses-elizabeth-taylor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Taylor<\/a>\u2019s first wedding dress, and her wedding gown for the film <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/iconic-wedding-dresses-in-film-the-father-of-the-bride\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Father of the Bride (opens in a new tab)\">Father of the Bride<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-wedding-dresses-film-high-society\/organza.jpg\" alt=\"High Society wedding dress organza fabric\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While studios usually keep the costumes their stars\nwear, MGM gave this dress to Grace as a wedding present. They also gifted her\nthe wedding dress that Helen Rose made, and a couple of other gowns that she\nhad worn while working for the company. Because of this, many of the dresses\nare now viewable by the public in various museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Other Dresses<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nare so many notable dresses from this film, which only goes to show Helen\u2019s\ngreat talent. Helen and Grace loved working together as she suited the elegant\ndresses Helen loved to make. Indeed, it was on the set for the film that the\ntwo discussed the design for Grace\u2019s real wedding dress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"High Society (1956) - Grace Kelly - Frank Sinatra\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RyswM0m-obc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In another scene in <em>High Society<\/em>, Tracy gets drunk and leaves her own bachelorette party. She meets with Mike (Sinatra) next to a swimming pool and the two dance. The lavender coloured dress features a line of embroidered flowers rippling from the shoulder to the bottom hem. It features a similar fit to her wedding dress, complete with belt and flowing skirt. It is the perfect fairy-tale gown. With this, she wore her hair delicately curled and perfectly put together for how drunk her character was.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Style Icon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of\nGrace\u2019s looks have been copied by countless celebrities in the years since. As\nsuch, we have seen repetitions of the dresses from <em>High Society<\/em>. At a gala in 2012, actor Jessica Alba sported a floor\nlength A-line gown that was very similar to Tracy\u2019s wedding dress. It featured\na sheer fabric over an opaque underdress and was embroidered with flowers.
