Most often, wedding dresses in\nfilm usually means a marriage is about to occur. Sometimes, the drama requires\none half of the happy couple, and in this case there is no actual wedding.\nHowever, the 1957 film Funny Face<\/em>\ngoes even further: there was never meant to be a wedding in the first place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Funny Face \u2013 the film<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hepburn\u2019s first outing into musical films occurred in 1957 with Funny Face<\/em>, a film about a photographer and a bookseller. She plays the character of Jo Stockton, an intellectual bookworm who becomes, by chance, a high-fashion model. Throughout the film<\/a> she develops a love interest with Fred Astaire\u2019s character which is particularly poignant when set against the backdrop of the most romantic city in the world \u2013 Paris. The film itself encompasses fashion, style, culture, art, and romance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When fashion magazine Quality<\/em> are looking to launch their new\nrange of clothes \u2013 for women with both beauty and brains \u2013 they stumble upon Jo\u2019s\nbookshop and barge in to start taking photographs. The magazine\u2019s editor,\nMaggie Prescott, tries to get her involved in the photoshoot, but Jo refuses.\nShe says the fashion industry is \u201can unrealistic approach\nto self-impressions as well as economics\u201d. Maggie then ushers Jo out of\nher own shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However,\nphotographer Dick Avery, played by Fred Astaire, noticed something about Jo and\nsuggests she could get a free trip to Paris (where her favourite philosopher\nlives) if she joined them as a model to launch their new range. She eventually\nagrees and the two grow closer during their time in France taking photographs\nand sightseeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although\nthere are mishaps along the way, Jo begins to really enjoy modelling. But, when\nshe is modelling a wedding dress outside a church she realises that she is\nlonely. Dick kissed her in New York and she feels like a fraud wearing a white\ndress without being with him. Eventually they do get together, and the film\nends with them dancing as she wears the dress for a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wedding Dress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The iconic dress that Jo wore in the churchyard was a white ballerina-length wedding gown. The dress featured a full skirt, a dropped waist and a tight bodice. Hepburn\u2019s small figure was part of her identity in Hollywood and this dress was excellent at emphasising it. Layers upon layers of tulle under the skirt make it flounce and really accentuate the dress\u2019 shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a highly playful dress,\nwhich only becomes more evident as the two characters start to dance together.\nHowever, it is also elegant and refined, much like Hepburn herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
