And,\nthough a lot has changed since Farrow and Sinatra got hitched, her wedding\noutfit was fairly modern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The History<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

American\nactress and model Mia Farrow married Frank Sinatra on July 19th, 1966. He was\n49 at the time, and she was just 21. The unlikely couple had met two years\npreviously on the set of Sinatra\u2019s film Von\nRyan\u2019s Express<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Iconic<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Mia was Sinatra\u2019s third wife, and she was younger than two of his children. As a result, he insisted on eloping and having a wedding in secret. It is rumoured that one of Sinatra\u2019s friends said of the coupling \u201cMarry Mia Farrow? I\u2019ve scotch older than her!<\/a>\u201d Nonetheless, the two were head over heels for each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fashion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Now, before we go on to discuss Mia\u2019s wedding dress, or rather suit, let\u2019s have a look at the styles of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mod\nmovement, or subculture, began in London in the late 1950s, eventually\ninfluencing trends all over the world. Drawing its roots from music, mod\nstarted with stylish young Londoners. The dominant elements of mod subculture\nincluded fashion, music and art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Iconic<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The name\nmod comes from the word modernist, meaning young listeners of modern jazz and\nbebop. The fashion included tailored suits, motor scooters and amphetamines.\nThis drift away from the working class jazz movement to psychedelia happened in\nthe mid 1960s. London became known for its fashion, music and pop culture \u2013\nreferred to as ‘Swinging London’. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mod\nfashion encompassed a wide variety of styles, with mod subcategories such as\n\u201csoft mod\u201d or \u201cpeacock mod\u201d, being coined for the eclectic mix of trends. For\nsome, mod went in the punk rock \u201cskinhead\u201d direction, while others went for the\nbohemian, hippie look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Iconic<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Mod\nfashion was always innovative, creative, bold and brash. Mod underwent a revival\nin the ’80s and ’90s and is still apparent today. Mod is still prevalent on the\ncatwalks of this era; three-piece suits, Chelsea boots and mini dresses are on\nheavy rotation in the fashion world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mod was\nconsidered a fashion revolution, the youth driven movement signified\nindividuality and the importance of fashion. Many leading fashion houses\nfollowed suit, including Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and\nGivenchy. Most notable however, was Mary Quant; her boutique in Chelsea was\ncredited as the beginning of the \u2018London Look\u2019. Her designs challenged the\nfashion world; she made mod fashion affordable and readily available to the\nmasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mia and Mod<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So, where\ndoes Mia Farrow, and her wedding dress, fit in to this? Well, mod continued to\nspread and held great influence in the United States. By the time she tied the\nknot the American mod movement was in full swing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nfemale mods the dress code was androgyny, short haircuts, men\u2019s trousers or\nshirts and flat shoes, with little makeup, dominating the trend. Skirts started\ngetting shorter, popularised by fashion favourites – Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Iconic<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Mia cut her hair herself<\/a> \u2013 with nail scissors – earlier that year. The pixie hairstyle became synonymous with her name. Although rumour had it that she cut the locks for her role in Rosemary\u2019s Baby<\/em>, and Sinatra hated it, neither of these were true. She also readily wore shift dresses and other mod fashions in her roles and as a model for photoshoots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before\nher career as an actress took off, Mia found work as a fashion model after her\nmother left and her father died. This was four years before her marriage to\nSinatra and the mod movement was hitting America. She was often dressed in mod\nstyle dresses with peter pan collars for such shoots. When her acting career\nstarted to take off, she left the modelling industry behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wedding<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Never one\nto blindly follow convention, Mia chose to rock this young and hip fashion at\nher own wedding. She and Frank Sinatra tied the knot at Sands Hotel in Las\nVegas on 19th<\/sup> July 1966. The ceremony was short, supposedly only\nlasting fifteen minutes. In that time they said their vows, legally became man\nand wife, posed for photographs and cut a wedding cake provided for them by the\nvenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\nproudly wore a two-piece crisp white skirt suit to go with her short pixie\nhairstyle. She looked the epitome of \u201960s mod on her wedding day. Mia\u2019s short\nhair perfectly complemented her delicate features, and her pale clean-cut suit\nlooked effortlessly sweet and chic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Iconic<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The suit\nwas neatly tailored and incorporated a bow around the waist with a cropped,\ndouble-breasted jacket on top. She wore limited makeup and just a simple bracelet\naround one wrist, remaining otherwise androgynous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncouple often flew to Sinatra\u2019s base in Palm Springs, California. They headed\nhere, to Bill Goetz\u2019s house, for the reception immediately after the wedding. In\nthe evening, Mia swapped one formless dress for another. This one, although\nalso white, featured a heavily embroidered floral lace overdress with shamrock imagery.\nTogether they cut a second wedding cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Iconic<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Sadly,\nthis was to be a short-lived marriage. With two dresses and two cakes, the\nmarriage lasted just two years. He made her promise to leave the world of\nacting, but asked her to appear in his film The\nDetective<\/em>. When she refused, he filed for the divorce. Sinatra served Mia\nwith the divorce papers on the set of her film Rosemary\u2019s Baby<\/em> in front of the entire cast and crew. The divorce\nwas finalised the same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aftermath<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Frank\nwent on to marry model and showgirl Barbara Marx in 1976, and they remained\nmarried until his death in 1998. Meanwhile, Mia married composer Andr\u00e9 Previn\nfrom 1970 till 1979, when she started a long-term relationship with Woody\nAllen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mia and\nFrank remained close friends, and there is reportedly contention about who\nfathered some of Mia\u2019s children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
