If you\u2019re confused about the legal aspects of\ngetting married, you\u2019ve come to the right place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly,\nyour wedding day is about you and your partner. Thus, your primary concern\nshould be to arrange a day that reflects you both. However, for a legal\nmarriage there are numerous aspects to consider. When you\u2019re planning on\ngetting married, the building you have chosen must have a marriage license for\nweddings. Otherwise it\u2019s not an official or legal marriage ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/wu-jianxiong-266198-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK government has a <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/440072\/ApprovedPremisesGuideIssue5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"36 page document (opens in a new tab)\">36 page document<\/a> specifying what is needed for a venue to register for civil ceremonies. We have broken it down. Find out more about venue licencing for your big day below\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Civil ceremony or religious wedding?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we\ngo any further, let us point out that this article refers to civil ceremonies.\nWe are not referring to religious ceremonies, or to wedding receptions. To\nclarify, let\u2019s break down some definitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Religious wedding<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nreligious wedding is one that takes place in any registered religious building.\nThis can be a church, chapel, cathedral, mosque, synagogue or temple, or\nanything else we have missed here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Civil wedding<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast,\na civil wedding is one that does not take place in a religious building. This\ncould be a register office or at any registered venue (which we will discuss\nlater in this article). A registrar must be present, as well as two witnesses.\nThis does not mean that it is a non-religious weddings, as couples in England\nand Wales cannot have a legally binding humanist wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Civil partnership<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently\nonly available for same sex couples, a civil partnership, or union, includes\nmost of the rights as a marriage but under a different name. There is no need\nfor a ceremony to take place, although many would choose to have one. Same sex\ncouples can choose to have a religious or civil wedding (but not in Anglican\nchurches).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/scott-webb-67670-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Ceremony<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nceremony is the legal part of a wedding. Dependent on the style (your religion\nor a secular ceremony) this can last anywhere from twenty minutes to several\nhours. It usually involves exchanging rings and vows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Reception<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This is\nwhere people can get creative with their weddings. There are no restrictions on\nwhere you can host your wedding reception. Think of it as the after party to officially\ntying the knot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>So can I get married anywhere?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, no. Unfortunately there are plenty of restrictions in place as to where you can get married. First and foremost, the venue must have a licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are browsing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/wedding-venues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"our directory (opens in a new tab)\">our directory<\/a>, this should be easy to spot. Although some venues listed on our site cater solely for receptions, plenty do the whole shebang. Look out for phrases like \u201call-inclusive venue\u201d to find somewhere to host both your ceremony and reception. Licensed venues should be well marked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/ben-rosett-10609-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\nyou needn\u2019t worry too much. Most wedding venues do hold civil ceremony licenses\nnowadays, whether that is a manor house, hotel or barn venue and everything in\nbetween. Most locations will offer couples at least one space that is licensed\nto host civil ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\nare looking for a location to host your ceremony, then make sure you check with\neach venue that you peruse to ascertain if they hold the necessary license\nfirst!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Can anywhere get a licence?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, unfortunately, no. There are some places where it is just not possible to wed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>1. Outdoors<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>For those\nlooking for an al fresco ceremony, we have bad news. Whilst technically you can\nsay your vows and exchange rings in the open air, marriages in England, Wales\nand Ireland must be signed indoors. This also excludes any form of transport,\nincluding boats that are not permanently moored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/erik-stine-46332-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the case in Scotland, where you can be legally married in a respectful and approved outdoor location with a humanist ceremony. Take a look at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/humanist-ceremony-all-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"previous post (opens in a new tab)\">previous post<\/a> for further information about this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nreason for this law in the first place is because of Britain\u2019s inclement weather!\nThe register is an important document and nobody wants it to get wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/james-bold-640643-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But, even\nin the rest of the UK, there is a loophole. You can get married outdoors if it\nis underneath a fixed, permanent structure. &nbsp;This could be a gazebo or any\nother type of structure, as long as the bride and groom are stood underneath\nit. This does not include marquees, but talk to your venue as they will know\nthe laws best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>2. Anywhere other than the registered room<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if\nthe venue you have chosen holds a wedding licence, this does not mean that you\ncan get married where you choose. Similarly to not being able to marry\noutdoors, you cannot marry outside of the registered room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/james-bold-600928-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly,\nit is not buildings that are registered but individual rooms. So, if you\nthought you liked the idea of signing the registry in your hotel bedroom, think\nagain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When\nvisiting venues, make sure you check exactly which rooms are registered.\nHowever, remember that you can often choose exactly how to lay out the room, so\nyou can still get your personalised venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>3. Undignified venues<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Weddings are, legally speaking, solemn events. As a result, the primary purpose of a building will be taken into account. And undignified is not just the word we are using. The <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/440072\/ApprovedPremisesGuideIssue5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Approved Premises Guide (opens in a new tab)\">Approved Premises Guide<\/a> quotes \u201cthe premises must, in the opinion of the authority be a seemly and dignified venue for the proceedings\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/kevin-lanceplaine-674607-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore,\nyou cannot register a venue for a single event, as \u201cit is expected that the\npremises are made available regularly for the registration of civil\npartnerships and the solemnization of civil marriages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All venues must prove safe from fire, and individual councils have the right to set their own restrictions, too. A blessing is an alternative\noption if your dream space isn\u2019t licensed for ceremonies and if you\u2019re not too\nfussed about the legalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the\nother hand, you can always do all the legal stuff at a registry office in the\nmorning or a few days before your wedding. After that, you can hold a blessing\nwherever you choose. This means that legally you are married and you can still\nhave the ceremony you have always dreamed of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/venue\/Licensing-Venue\/Edmund_Blair_Leighton_-_signing_the_register.jpg\" alt=\"venue licensing\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And of\ncourse, you don\u2019t need a license to host your wedding reception celebration!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Licensing may seem like a difficult and restrictive element in searching for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/wedding-venues-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"wedding venue (opens in a new tab)\">wedding venue<\/a>, but it&#8217;s really quite straightforward.
