The infamous blonde bombshell\nmarried not once but three times in her short life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The term\nsex symbol was basically invented to describe the model-turned-actress.\nUnfortunately none of her marriages lasted long and she was three times\ndivorced before she died in 1962 at the age of 36.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>High School Sweetheart<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marilyn Monroe (then Norma Jeane) married her first husband in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/iconic-wedding-dresses-of-the-40s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"1942  (opens in a new tab)\">1942 <\/a>when she was 16. The Los Angeles Police officer, James Dougherty, announced in an interview that they were getting married to prevent her from going into an orphanage but that they were also very much in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-dresses-marilyn-monroe\/actress-beautiful-black-and-white-53453.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The young beauty had a tough life up until this point. She had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/theguardian\/2007\/sep\/14\/greatinterviews\ufeff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"dreamt of being an actress (opens in a new tab)\">dreamt of being an actress<\/a> from the age of five to escape from her real life in orphanages and foster homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marilyn\nwas an unknown brunette who wore a traditional girl-next-door floor length gown\nto her nuptials. The A-line dress featured long sleeves and lace detailing on\nthe skirt. The modest wedding dress was coupled with a short veil and half-up\ncurled hairstyle that was very typical of the 40s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-dresses-marilyn-monroe\/Iconic-Wedding-Dresses-of-Monroe-Image-2.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncouple apparently had an idyllic marriage and Marilyn was an endearing\nhousewife until James enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1943. Meanwhile,\nMarilyn caught the eye of a photographer as she was working and she scored her\nfirst modelling gig. Her popularity grew, and her husband got further away. She\nsigned to a modelling agency and became a very popular pin-up girl. Desperate\nto learn the craft of acting, she threw herself into the film industry to watch\neveryone at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As James\nwas against her having a career, Marilyn decided to file for divorce in 1946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Infamous Elopement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Marilyn spent twelve years husband-less. Then, she met baseball player Joe DiMaggio in 1952. The couple first met after DiMaggio saw a photo of Monroe, and asked the photographer to set the two up on a date. Marilyn wasn\u2019t too keen on meeting Joe, as she expected him to be the typical baseball-playing &#8220;jock&#8221;. However, Joe exceeded her expectations and the two quickly fell in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\nmarried on January 14<sup>th<\/sup> 1954 in an informal wedding ceremony in San\nFrancisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-dress-secret.com\/celebweddings\/Marilyn\/1.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/iconic-wedding-dresses-in-film-gentlemen-prefer-blondes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"glamorous onscreen image (opens in a new tab)\">glamorous onscreen image<\/a> (and first wedding dress) Marilyn opted for a low-key chocolate brown skirt suit. The demure outfit featured a cute white fur Peter Pan collar and button down detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\ncarried with her a small bunch of orchids. Her understated appearance was\nperfect for their informal elopement at San Francisco City Hall. Marilyn looked\nabsolutely radiant. It\u2019s clear to see that she was bursting with excitement on\nher wedding day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-dresses-marilyn-monroe\/Marilyn_Monroe_Joe_DiMaggio_January_1954.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They honeymooned in Japan, and Monroe travelled to Korea to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmuseum.af.mil\/Upcoming\/Press-Room\/Features\/Display\/Article\/199083\/hollywood-helps-air-force-connect-with-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"perform ten shows (opens in a new tab)\">perform ten shows<\/a> in just four days for over 60,000 servicemen \u2013 which conquered her fear of performing in front of large audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monroe\nand DiMaggio divorced 274 days later. She allegedly cited \u201cmental cruelty\u201d as\nher reasoning. However, rumour has it that Monroe and DiMaggio never really\nfell out of love. It was said they had planned to remarry in August 1962, sadly\nthe month of Monroe\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-dresses-marilyn-monroe\/Iconic-Wedding-Dresses-of-Monroe-Image-4.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nYankee never stopped trying to win her back. Apparently he had fresh roses\ndelivered to her grave twice a week until his own death in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monroe\u2019s\nwedding outfit was sold at auction in 1998, fetching $33,350. Her wedding ring\nwas also sold. The 35-diamond band was missing a diamond, to symbolise the\nunfilled promise of the couple\u2019s love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Third and Final<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the\ndivorce was being finalised, Marilyn was having relationships with Joe, Marlon\nBrando and playwright Arthur Miller. The affair with Miller became big news as\nher divorce finalised at the same time as he left his wife. Her studio tried to\nconvince her to stay away, as he was under scrutiny from the FBI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nofficially changed her name to Marilyn Monroe shortly before they wed on June\n29th 1956 at Westchester County Court in New York. A few days later, they\nfollowed their civil ceremony with a Jewish one, at the home of Millers\u2019\nHollywood agent, Kay Brown. The intimate at-home Jewish ceremony that lasted\nfour minutes, and with that Monroe converted to Judaism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-dresses-marilyn-monroe\/Marilyn_Monroe_Arthur_Miller_April_in_Paris_Ball_1957.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rings were inscribed with \u201cNow is forever\u201d and Marilyn was given away by her acting teacher Lee Strasberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monroe\nadorned a mid-length gown oozing effortless glamour and sophistication. The\ndress was figure-hugging and nipped in at the waist to accentuate the stars\nfeminine figure. It featured sheer, gathered sleeves and a low scooped neck.\nShe also wore white wrist length gloves to complement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-dresses-marilyn-monroe\/Monroe_Miller_Wedding.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nblonde bombshell\u2019s hair was pinned into curls and her veil was playful and\nshort, just covering her hair and face. Her bridal look was full of understated\ncharm, perfect for their intimate nuptials. Her natural beauty shined through\nand she was clearly ecstatic during the celebrations from the images that we\nhave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Marilyn&#8217;s Curtain Call<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller encouraged\nMarilyn to take the role of Sugar Kane Kowalczyk in <em>Some Like It Hot<\/em>, and this became her biggest hit. It is considered\none of the best films of all time, and Monroe won a Golden Globe for her\nefforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/dress\/Iconic-dresses-marilyn-monroe\/Iconic-Wedding-Dresses-of-Monroe-Image-1.jpg\" alt=\"Iconic Wedding Dresses of Marilyn Monroe\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nthe latter half of their marriage, there were heavily publicised affairs from\nboth Monroe and Miller. Marilyn suffered multiple miscarriages and her health\nwas going downhill rapidly. She started to rely upon barbiturates. During\nfilming for <em>The Misfits<\/em>, written by\nMiller, she needed to take a week\u2019s hiatus to detox in hospital. As soon as\nfilming finished, the pair filed for a quick divorce. Miller married the set\nphotographer he had been having an affair with. Monroe\u2019s health continued to\ntumble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her last\nrole, in <em>Something\u2019s Got To Give<\/em>, saw\nher swimming naked in a pool. She invited photographers after filming and did\nnot wear the skin coloured body stocking she was offered.
