Bridesmaids, rings, and of course feasts! They did it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a history\nbuff, have a Roman wedding venue nearby, or have a penchant for togas, maybe\nyou should could consider a Roman themed wedding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\nmay seem a little extreme to go out of your way to robe your entire wedding\nparty in Roman garb, but you can certainly pick and choose your inspiration!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>The History Lesson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nRomans were one of the most powerful, influential classical empires, existing\nfrom 750 BC until almost 450 AD. This great civilisation originated in the city\nof Rome, and its dominant period influenced many aspects of our modern society.\nFrom architecture and town planning to politics, religion, language, and even\nsanitation, the Romans gave a lot to the modern world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/matteo-vistocco-397438-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Customs\nlike having bridesmaids originated from this era, only the reasoning is a\nlittle darker than expected. Bridesmaids were often servants of the bride who\nwould wait hand and foot on her. They surrounded the bride and wore similar\ndresses to her in an attempt to thwart evil spirits. Some even had to fight\nex-suitors, or at least confuse him for long enough for him to realise he\u2019d got\nthe wrong woman. The same reasoning goes for the existence of veils, although\nthis also has to do with arranged marriages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/tamara-menzi-224984-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover,\nthe groom would have to cross the threshold with his new wife. When he picked\nher up to carry her inside, it was said to be exceptionally bad luck for the\nmarriage. This, and many other traditions and superstitions, come from Roman\ntimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Get the Theme Started! &nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What do\nyou think of when you think Roman? It might be togas and sandals, or laurel\nwreaths, centurions and charging into battle. Perhaps it\u2019s marble, sculpture\nand colossal buildings, or else wine, olives and bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/madeline-pere-747527-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However\nyou think of the Romans, this would be a great way to start your wedding theme.\nThis was a race with a very strong cultural identity. There are plenty of\nelements you can take from the Roman way of dressing, their culture, food and\naesthetic appeal!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Set the Scene<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless\nyou plan on travelling to Rome to tie the knot, it might be very difficult to\nfind somewhere to get married that fits the theme. Think outside the box and,\nprobably, outside. With Mediterranean weather as it is, pray for sunshine and\narrange for your wedding al fresco. Perhaps you can set the scene like an\nancient battle, or else an amphitheatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Legally, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/humanist-weddings-all-about-getting-married-in-the-great-british-outdoors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"cannot currently marry outdoors in England and Wales (opens in a new tab)\">cannot currently marry outdoors in England and Wales<\/a>, so you might have to visit a registry office for your ceremony. Or, consider something entirely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/roman-baths-pump-room-wedding-venue-bath.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/A-Thing-Like-That-Sunset-higher-res.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have a nearby museum with a trove of Roman artefacts? Maybe you live near Bath and could hire the magnificent and historical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/roman-baths-pump-room-wedding-venue-bath.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Roman Baths (opens in a new tab)\">Roman Baths<\/a>. Otherwise, use your imagination to turn your chosen venue into your Roman dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Decoration <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of\nmarbled pillars and Mediterranean foliage. It would make quite an impact at the\nentrance or periphery of your venue. Columns cut in a traditional Roman shape\ncould be bought, or made with reasonable ease. You could even find models of\nRoman gods to sit at the centre of each of your tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t\nforget the flora. Olive, lemon and orange trees are all staples of Rome and\nItaly. Whilst it may be difficult to plant them in your venue, you could\naccessorize with olives, grapes and citrus fruits. You could also find a\ndecorative tree in a pot or pile fruit on tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/erwan-hesry-102074-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Use\nplenty of gold colour to bring that feeling of Roman opulence. Pair it with a rich\npurple to feel like royalty, or crimson to feel like a centurion. An Egyptian\nblue colour could also look fantastic as it will contrast with the food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Food<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An\nItalian-inspired menu would be a great path to go down when it comes to\ncatering at your wedding. If you are looking to get DIY wedding ideas for a Roman\nwedding theme buffet, then the traditional reclining banquets of the Roman\nEmpire would be perfect for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Roman\ndiet consisted of a simple and healthy selection of foods, such as bread, fish,\nsalad, fruits, cheese, nuts and cold meat. All of these ingredients are readily\navailable nowadays at relatively cheap prices. Try to find authentic Italian\nvarieties of the foods listed above for a real taste of the old empire!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/appetizer-bowl-delicious-1799401.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\nabsolutely must serve wine, ideally from decanters or carafes into goblets for\nadded effect. Olives and bread are a must for tables. In fact, did you know\nthat traditional Roman wedding cakes were most likely actually bread? Wheat was\na symbol of fertility and so many guests brought loaves to the newlyweds \u2013 then\nfought over the crumbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>What to Wear<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the\nthought of wearing a tunic or helmet at your wedding ceremony is too much, consider\ngetting into costume a little further into the wedding day. The reception is\nthe perfect time to let your hair down, celebrate being together, and not worry\nabout the solemn, legal side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full\nlegionary military uniform and armour would be interesting, but probably rather\nheavy and uncomfortable. Togas or tunics would be more acceptable, and infinitely\nmore budget friendly! This goes for guests of any gender, as the toga was a\nneutral garb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/andre-hunter-263233-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t want to confine your guests to purchasing some fancy dress they may never wear again, consider buying prop helmets and tunics. Offer a dressing up box at the door so that guests can join in even if they haven\u2019t pre-prepared. It may be an extra expense for you, but the effect is sure to be phenomenal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On your\nfeet, wear sandals. You can find some fantastic footwear nowadays that combines\na high heel with gladiator straps, and similar is available for men. Plenty of\njewellery would complete a look nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Entertainment <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most\nauthentic form of live music you could have at your wedding would be a lute. Of\ncourse, players of this instrument are hard to come by! Instead, find someone\nwho can play the harp. This is the instrument most closely associated with all\nthe fineries and classical nuances of antiquity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/magazine\/planning\/Roman\/ancient-architecture-aspendos-165173.jpg\" alt=\"Roman Wedding Theme\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ntheatre of ancient Rome is thought to have heavily influenced thespian\npractices to this day. For some authentic Roman theatre, bring in some\nprofessional actors to perform excerpts from Julius Caesar! Furthermore, find a\njester \u2013 or just a comedian who might be willing to dress up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you are looking to have a Roman wedding theme, then you could take on board a few of the points outlined above. But do remember; these should merely serve as inspiration.
