So you have booked your perfect venue and start sending out Save The Dates<\/a>. Then, you\u2019re sent the contract and suddenly see a long list of restrictions. What do you mean, you can\u2019t have candles?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

But don\u2019t panic. We at The Wedding Secret have scoured these restrictions lists to find the questions you should ask your venue \u2013 before you book \u2013 so that you aren\u2019t unhappily surprised. These are several fairly common restrictions that you should always ask about and take into consideration before deciding upon a wedding reception venue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will the venue close at a set time?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Firstly,\nfind out whether your party will have to finish at a set time, and whether this\naffects your decision to book. For example, some venues require that you have\nleft by 10pm. Others allow you to stay later, but will likely impose\nrestrictions on noise (music and other!) after a certain time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your\nchosen venue is located in a residential area, there may be restrictions on\nnoise levels altogether, which could mean problems if you are thinking about\nhiring a band, or even a sound-system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does the venue hold a suitable alcohol licence?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another\npossible restriction to be sure to ask about is the venue’s alcohol policy.\nSome local authorities impose limitations on the serving of alcohol in certain\nlocations. This is a particularly relevant restriction to ask about if you\u2019re\nthinking about planning an outdoor reception, or using a temporary structure\nsuch as a marquee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure\nthat your venue has obtained the appropriate licence before you think about\nmoving any alcohol there \u2013 the last thing you want on your wedding day is for\nthe police to show up and take it all away! And double check the corkage fee if\nyou plan on bringing your own. Having spent so much money on your wedding, you\ndon\u2019t want any extra surprises on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are children allowed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately,\nmany luxury wedding venues impose restrictions over where children may go, and\nat what times. If there will be children attending your wedding, it\u2019s a good\nidea to find out if the venue has any child-minding facilities or services in\nplace, as, for example, some are able to provide babysitters in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some\nvenues refuse entry to children altogether, and others issue warnings to\nparents who let their kids wander. Check the policies before you book and\ninvite any parents, or pregnant guests!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can\u00a0I\u00a0decorate\u00a0how\u00a0I\u00a0like?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some\nvenues have decoration restrictions, which you will need to make sure you are\naware of well in advance so that you can prepare something that fits in with\nthe requirements. For example, some venues will not allow you to use certain\nflowers that are prone to creating pollen stains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In old buildings\nespecially, there are likely to be constraints about adding d\u00e9cor to the walls\nand ceilings. Venues might ask you how you intend to attach things, for the\nsafety of both the guests and the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some\nvenues are additionally strict and particular over their other restrictions;\nsome don\u2019t like confetti, and some even forbid high-heeled shoes for fear of\nthe flooring becoming damaged \u2013 this likely won\u2019t go down well with at least a\ncouple of wedding guests!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I light candles?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is little\nmore romantic than flickering candlelight. The idea of filling your wedding reception\nwith glowing light is appealing. However, a lot of venues have a ban on\ncandles, or at least uncovered flames. Buildings need to have strict fire\nregulations, and unfortunately candles just don\u2019t fit into their plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\ncheck to see if they will allow lanterns and other covered flames. Otherwise,\nlook into electric versions. You could still get the desired effect, but with\nno chance of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are your restrictions on\nfireworks?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Whilst we\nare on the subject of fire risks, let\u2019s talk fireworks. If a hotel or manor\nhouse has a large garden then they may allow you to set off a spectacular\nfirework show. Some may forbid it outright, whilst others will set a distance\nlimit from nearby buildings. It is your job, not your fireworks provider\u2019s, to\nmake sure you know the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you are booking a marquee and an open field, there will still be rules in place. This also goes for sparklers, fire pits<\/a> and anything else that may come with a night outside, so be aware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am I able to use my own suppliers?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It is\nimportant you ask the venues you are interested in if you are allowed to bring\nyour own caterer, decorator etc. with you. Sometimes you are obliged to choose\nfrom their list of contractors and suppliers. This is especially true for\nvenues with restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes,\neven a venue with an in-house catering team will allow you to bring in an\noutside caterer and use the kitchen. Other times, venues won\u2019t have a kitchen\nand your chosen caterer will have to bring in their own equipment. This could\nraise the cost of hiring your catering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However\ndon\u2019t assume that it is just food that is affected. Everything from DJs to photographers\nmay be provided by the venue are you may not be allowed to hire anyone\ndifferent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I bring my own equipment?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When\ngetting ready on-site, you might want to bring the kitchen sink. But this can\u2019t\nnecessarily be the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any\nelectrical equipment that you bring to venues should be PAT tested. If you are\nbooking someone for your hair, check that their hairdryers and straighteners\nare compliant \u2013 they should be. Otherwise, there should be appliances in the\nbedrooms if it is a hotel that you are looking at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same is true of other electrical equipment, especially amplifiers, PA systems and even lighting. Check with your wedding band<\/a> or DJ to make sure they aren’t turned away on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What else should I know?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We have\nlisted a further sample of other limitations you may come across:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • No red wine (until guests are seated)<\/li>
  • Limited (or no) parking on-site<\/li>
  • No smoking on the grounds<\/li>
  • A maximum room capacity (including guests, suppliers, and everyone)<\/li>
  • A necessary minimum charge on the bar<\/li>
  • No moving of furniture<\/li>
  • No food trucks<\/li>
  • Restricted start time for vendors<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Make sure you are aware of any restrictions well in\nadvance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Venue\nrestrictions should come clearly stated within the contract or information pack\noften supplied. If you cannot find details of their restrictions in the\ncontract, simply ask about them just to make sure!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This\narticle should act as a list of questions which you can take to the venues on\nyour list so you can find the perfect fit for your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The important\nthing to remember is that you will need to find out well in advance about any\nlimitations a particular venue may impose.
