Dragon Hall in Norwich was built around 1430 by Robert Toppes and can now\nhost your memorable wedding day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Ancient History<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dragonhallnorwich.org.uk\/pages\/history-of-dragon-hall.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Robert Toppes (opens in a new tab)\">Robert Toppes<\/a> was born (probably) in around 1400. As this was the Dark Ages, and there was no internet, it is hard to verify all the facts we know. However, historians have done their best to piece together what happened in this period. Toppes was a mercer (merchant) and was awarded the right to trade in 1421. Quickly, he became very wealthy, and soon hundreds of people owed him money. He also owned at least 31 properties in Norwich and beyond. At one point, Toppes became mayor and lead Norwich to the second largest and richest city in England, behind London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-venue-secret.com\/posts\/Dragonhall\/Wensum.jpg\" alt=\"River Wensum. Dragon Hall.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He\nbuilt Dragon Hall, known then as Splytt&#8217;s, around 1430, on a plot\nthat now sits just minutes from the city centre. This was a \u201cmedieval merchant\u2019s trading complex\u201d.\nIts position next to the River Wensum and King Street meant that traders could\nmove their goods by horse or by boat through England and even Europe. He built\na first floor trading hall with seven bays, and decorated the spandrels with\ncarvings of dragons. He maintained a ground floor reception area and built a\nwarehouse next to the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-venue-secret.com\/posts\/Dragonhall\/dragony.jpg\" alt=\"dragon, Dragon Hall, wedding venue Norfolk\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as old and as interesting as all of this\nis, the history of the site dates back even further. Excavation has discovered\nevidence of a hut beneath the hall, thought to date back to Saxon England. That\nis to say, it would have been built at the turn of the century. A domestic\nhouse, dating back to the 1300s, was found to the south of the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Modern History<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After Toppes\u2019 death, the building was\nrepurposed for residential use. Over the years, some of the original\narchitecture was ripped away to make room for more and more tenants. An attic\nand cellar were added and the site got the new name \u201cOld Barge Building\u201d.\nOutside, more buildings sprang up holding yet more residents. Part of the hall\nbecame a pub, and in 1937 a programme removed all the tenants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-venue-secret.com\/posts\/Dragonhall\/Dragon1.jpg\" alt=\"Dragon Hall, wedding venue\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1950s, the building was awarded Grade\nI-listed status. Norwich City Council bought the property in 1979 in order to\nrestore it to glory with the help of a \u00a31.8 million Heritage Lottery\ngrant. It adopted the name \u201cDragon Hall\u201d due to the\ndragon emblems in the ceiling and slowly received additions to bring it into\nthe 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. Central heating, toilets, a lift and a kitchen\nmean it can be used for functions, performances and, of course, weddings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-venue-secret.com\/posts\/Dragonhall\/Dragon6.jpg\" alt=\"Holding hands outside Dragon Hall wedding venue\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the building is owned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"National Centre for Writing (opens in a new tab)\">National Centre for Writing<\/a> who runs creative events inside and in the gardens. Clearly, this building has had a great deal of love and attention spent on it over the years, with considerable interest and money invested in its history, archaeology and preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Weddings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With easy links to central Norwich, and stunning architecture, Dragon Hall is a wonderful place to say \u201cI do\u201d. The venue has a civil ceremony licence so you can enjoy your whole day at the same place. Couples enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/B04580_NCW_Dragon-Hall_Wedding-Brochure_Insides_WEB_01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"exclusive use of the venue (opens in a new tab)\">exclusive use of the venue<\/a> when they hire, so they and their guests can make the most of the hall. Because the building used to house and showcase the wealthy merchant\u2019s goods, space will never be an issue in this wedding venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-venue-secret.com\/posts\/Dragonhall\/Dragon3.jpg\" alt=\"Happy couple at Dragon Hall, historic wedding venue in Norwich\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Marry under the tall and ancient roof of the Great Hall, which can accommodate up to a whopping 120 guests. After the ceremony, your guests can filter out to the serene courtyard garden (British weather permitting). This is a fantastic place to unwind, keep the kids entertained, and maybe even host some live music! And, of course, take those all-important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/wedding-photographer-norfolk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"wedding photographs (opens in a new tab)\">wedding photographs<\/a>. Dragon Hall is one of very few centrally-located wedding or conference venues in Norwich that offers an outdoor space as picturesque and extensive as this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-venue-secret.com\/posts\/Dragonhall\/Dragon5.jpg\" alt=\"Grand Hall wedding breakfast at Dragon Hall, Norwich\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dine in the superb atmosphere of the Great Hall, which will accommodate up to 80 guests for this purpose. After the laughs and embarrassing tales from your reception dinner, you and your guests can unwind in the Foyle Gallery. This is a fantastic modern-yet-traditional room that juxtaposes the medieval exterior of the building with a 21<sup>st<\/sup>century glass structure. This room can comfortably contain the party entertainment, so dance to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" band or a DJ  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theweddingsecret.co.uk\/wedding-bands-norfolk\" target=\"_blank\">band or a DJ<\/a> until night falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Inspiration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a wedding venue that sparks the imagination into overdrive.\nWander into the Great Hall and you will be awed by the towering oak crown-post\nroof.&nbsp;Look out for the carved wooden dragons that give the building its\nname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/images.wedding-venue-secret.com\/posts\/Dragonhall\/sword.jpg\" alt=\"sword.
