History
This stunning mansion was built in the mid-18th century by order of the 2nd Earl of Halifax, specifically for his mistress of the time! The house and gardens were designed by renowned architect and astronomer Thomas Wright, whose works include theorising that our galaxy, the Milky Way, is in fact disc-shaped. In the garden's Grade II*-listed Shell Grotto, also designed by Wright, you'll see his fascination with the universe come to life.
Today Hampton Court House is home to an independent co-educational school, and is available as a venue for events at particular points in the year, notably during summer months.
