History The original Chiswick House was designed by the third Earl of Burlington in the 18th century. He based his design on the works of many Italian architects he had seen, and this influence can still be seen today even though the house, and garden, has undergone many changes since then. The estate was passed to the Dukes of Devonshire and here the house saw many famous visitors, including Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and Queen Victoria. Once the Devonshires moved to Chatsworth, Chiswick House was to Edward VII and, later, a mental hospital. Now, the house and gardens have undergone extensive restoration with the help of English Heritage. It has been used a filming location for everyone from The Beatles to Vogue, and now hosts spectacular weddings.
