The Fonthill Estate spans over 9,000 acres and remains a working estate covering farming and forestry.

The estate has an absolutely incredible history, one which has been highly documented.

The first appearance of a house at Fonthill comes in 1533, when Sir John Mervyn purchased the estate and lived in a house surrounded by a park. A hundred years later Fonthill House was owned by Lord Cottington, Chancellor of the Exchequer in Charles I's reign. He built a wall around his park and commissioned an impressive stable block. During the Civil War, the estate was given by Oliver Cromwell to John Bradshaw, Lord President of the parliamentary commission that tried the king. The Cottingtons returned to Fonthill when Charles II was crowned in 1660.

There is a full and informative estate history located on the Fonthill Estate website.

Bake Barn offers couples a raw and authentic space to celebrate their wedding day. The décor is wonderfully simple, with natural stone walls, timber rafters and wooden floors. You can decorate the space as you wish with drapes and decorations.

There is a fireplace at one end of the room which lends itself to flowers, foliage and fairy lights. If you are getting married in the cooler months, the fireplace can be lit and offers a focal point for guests to come together and celebrate.

Upstairs you will find an additional space which works perfectly as a bar, cosy snug or games area.

Outside, you are truly blessed by the private and secluded courtyard, with views spanning over the sprawling estate. The Courtyard has a lawn area which is perfect for a marquee or tipi, or simply to scatter some hay bales for seating during your drinks reception. There is also a gravel area and a covered loggia. The loggia is licensed for civil ceremonies but also makes for a great evening hang out and bar. One final surprise; there is an enormous firepit in the courtyard - just imagine all your guests sipping on cocktails around the fire pit, under the starry night sky. We can't think of a better location to celebrate your love!
