Victoria Art Gallery

This historically fascinating and culturally-enriching city centre establishment houses a permanent collection of historic British and European Art, together with a space dedicated to constantly-changing modern and contemporary art exhibitions. Located at the historic heart of town, and affording wonderful panoramic views over the nearby Pulteney Bridge, Pulteney Weir and the Bath Parade Gardens, The Victoria Art Gallery presents an exquisite environment in which to hold a wedding ceremony and enjoy a few glasses of champagne.

Constructed and named in celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, today this building continues to function as an art gallery and is open to the public on most days of the year. Located on the opposite bank of the River Avon from another of Bath's many historic civic buildings, The Guildhall, this elegant establishment offers an ideal venue in which to host your ceremony and drinks reception, before continuing your celebrations elsewhere.

History

The construction of this magnificent two-storey building was commenced in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year in 1897, under the direct auspices of architect John McKean Brydon. Completed at the very turn of the 20th century, it rapidly became the showcase for a fine collection of British Oil Paintings ranging from the 17th century, featuring artists of the calibre of Thomas Gainsborough and Thomas Jones Barker.

The Victoria Art Gallery has been accredited with a prestigious Grade II* listing by the English Heritage organisation.

Facilities

The Upper Gallery

Imagine yourselves in the company of your guests toasting your recent union within the inspirational ambience that is the Upper Gallery. This elegant exhibition space is dominated by a series of historic British oil paintings, and is normally opened to the public, but can be hired exclusively for your drinks reception.

Your guests can enjoy their first glasses of bubbly under the Zodiac-encrusted dome that is the Rotunda (located at the top of the grand staircase), before heading into the wonderful azure gallery space.

It should be noted that on account of the delicate condition and historic nature of the paintings hung in the Upper Gallery, you are permitted to bring in only clear drinks like champagne, white wine, water or lemonade. This means that - regrettably - red wine, beers and soft drinks such as orange juice, cola or squashes are not allowed. If having a wider choice of drink options available is all-important, then hosting your reception in the Lower Gallery would be a prudent and practical alternative.

Ceremony and drinks reception capacity - 100 guests - Available for private hire after 5pm.

The Lower Gallery

At one time a lending library (converted to perform such a function in 1912), this ever-changing exhibition space features a number of temporary displays from a series of artists. If you are stuck for choice between hiring either The Upper Gallery or The Lower Gallery, simply enquire as to the nature and style of the exhibition that is due to be presented on your wedding day, and see if it matches or complements the theme of your wedding - or perhaps the personalities of yourself or your partner. Just get in touch with the Bath's Historic Venues team by clicking on the "Email this business" button or calling on the telephone number above to find out more.

Drinks reception capacity - 150 guests - However, the exact figure may vary depending on the nature and size of the current exhibition at the time of your event.

Catering

The art gallery is a drinks reception space only, and therefore light finger-food such as canapes would probably be your best option. Get in touch with a caterer of your choice to discuss further possibilities with them. Alternatively, the venue will be able to help you choose a preferred supplier from their list.
