Construction work on the hotel at Towan Head began at the end of the 19th century - considered quite controversial in the history books! With a group of fisherman laying claim to the headland as a place to dry their fishing nets, the preparation of the site was delayed somewhat by the so called 'Newquay Riots' which saw foundations damaged, culminating in the Foreman's cabin being thrown into the Atlantic Ocean! Finally the hotel was completed in 1900, featuring electricity, hot and cold water and much more.
The modern era has proved somewhat kinder to the hotel with over £30m worth of recent investment seeing it transformed into a cutting-edge masterpiece. And you just might recognise The Headland Hotel as the iconic setting for the 1990 film, The Witches!
