Dressing the wedding party : Mother of the bride

It goes without saying that the highlight of every wedding has got to be, will always be the bride. However, there is another member of the wedding party who is sure to become the centre of attention at various points during the day; the mother of the bride.

Although it is ultimately your mother that will herself be deciding what to wear, if you are both at a loss as to where to start, here are a few tips to get you going.

When should we start looking?

You and your mum should aim to start looking into mother-of-the-bride dresses as soon as the wedding gown and the bridesmaids’ dresses have been chosen.

Style

Mother-of-the-bride dresses are usually elegant and beautiful in style, without going too over the top. There is a tradition for mothers to sport an oversized hat on the day – but this is not essential, and it all comes down to taste! Mother-of-the-bride dresses should ideally be cohesive with the tone and theme of the wedding, and complement the rest of the wedding party. A good first step when searching for the perfect outfit is to try to find an example similar in style to the wedding dress you have chosen for yourself.

Whatever the dress is like, make sure that your mother is completely happy and comfortable with the choice as, if she’s not, it will be coming back to haunt her in photo form for many years to come!

Colour

Colour is the first thing everyone will notice about the dress, so it is important that you think carefully when selecting to ensure that it is going to fit with the overall colour scheme of your wedding.

When choosing the colour for a mother-of-the-bride dress, first consider what your bridesmaids will be wearing. You will ideally want to find a colour that will look fantastic next to your bridesmaids, as well as your own dress, as this will make for absolutely stunning wedding photos!

The mother of the bride could consider incorporating the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses into her own outfit by wearing a skirt or accessories of the same shade. Or she could wear the same colour, but in a richer tone. For example, if your bridesmaids will be wearing pastel blue, you could think about opting for royal blue or navy for the mother of the bride. This will allow your mother to stand out sufficiently, whilst keeping within the overall colour scheme of your wedding.

Just a quick word of warning; there are a few unwritten rules regarding the colour of mother-of-the-bride dresses. Traditionally, the mother of the bride is advised to avoid white, which will usually be worn by the bride, and wearing red is also not recommended, as it is seen as drawing attention away from the bride.

Click on the images above to start your search, and remember that no matter what her dress looks like, the mother of the bride will always look radiant as she watches and celebrates her daughter’s wedding!
