Chavenage House is a country residence originally constructed as far back as 1576, and presents a sumptuous setting for wedding celebrations of all shapes and sizes. Unlike many historic wedding venues, the main fabric of the original building has lain relatively undisturbed in its integral layout since the 17th century, and this is surely the principal reasoning behind its prestigious Grade I-listing.

Chavenage House presents five rooms available for hire, plenty of outdoor space, a wealth of serene grounds and views of the local countryside. Able to seat parties of up to 100 for a formal wedding breakfast and up to 300 for an evening reception party, and with no corkage charge, this fascinating Elizabethan house is extremely flexible and can cater for many couples' needs.

History

The Chavenage Estate has a rich recorded history spanning as far back as the 9th century, although the majority of the surviving principal house was erected in 1576.

The late Tudor manor house is wrought from warming yellow Cotswold stone, and carries a prestigious Grade I-listing, placing it into the same category as London's Westminster and Buckingham Palaces.

Today the manor is owned by Mr David Lowsley- Williams, whose family has lived in and administered the estate since the 19th century. Normally open exclusively to receive daily tours, if you decide to celebrate your wedding at Chavenage House, you are well and truly rejoicing in the heart of British history!

Chavenage House has frequently been adopted as the authentic setting for many of TV's period dramas, such as Poirot, Lark Rise To Candleford, Bonekickers and Tess Of The D'Urbervilles.

Facilities

As the manor house's principal reception space, this large and oak beam-ceilinged room positively brims with character. Comfortably able to seat up to 100 guests for a formal wedding breakfast, there are few venues in the local area that can match the traditional qualities of Chavenage House's Ball Room.

The Hall

This medieval hall comes complete with large open fire and many historic portraits featuring Chavenage's previous residents. Its position and size makes it perfect for hosting canapés and drinks receptions.

Ante Room

This room is situated between the Hall and the Ball Room, and can serve as a useful add-on in terms of seating for a reception. Or, for more intimate weddings, it can be arranged to seat all of your guests, while the Ball Room and its dancefloor is used in its traditional capacity to host the evening reception party (the same principle can be applied vice versa for larger weddings).

The Oak Room

This cosy and intimate space makes for a perfect side-room. Also a great backdrop for atmospheric interior photographs, it's an ideal retreat to enjoy a little peace and quiet and temporarily escape from the inevitable hustle and bustle of your big day.

Chomondley's Room

This convenient ensuite bedroom offers an ideal base for the bride and groom (and perhaps their respective entourages) to get changed and refreshed during the day.

Outside Space

Make use of the immaculately-kept lawns for activities such as croquet. Chavenage has even seen clay pigeon shooting as a featured wedding activity! There are plenty of opportunities for photographs outside too, such as on the splendid driveway and in the grounds, where vistas of rolling grasses and hills sprawl far into the distance.

Catering and Bars

Catering services are normally provided by a small in-house team for intimate events, but for larger events such as weddings, Chavenage House asks that you select an external company from their list of approved suppliers. This should be seen as an opportunity for you to have more control over the cuisine featuring on your special day.

Suppliers approved by Chavenage include Bath's Dine With Style, Cheltenham's Crown Catering, Gloucestershire's Napier Catering and Bristol's Fosters Events Catering.

Bars

Chavenage is not licensed to serve alcohol, which means that you can't introduce a pay-bar at your wedding. One positive aspect of the restriction means that Chavenage does not charge corkage, and instead asks that either you or your catering company provide the alcoholic beverages - naturally, this significantly reduces overall costs in comparison with many other wedding venues!

What our customers say

  • Jane - 12/01/2017

I have attended two weddings and several parties at Chavenage House. The venue is a wonderful old house, with log fires. It is the home of the owners but you are made very welcome and looked after well.

  • Carolyn - 04/10/2015

We have just held the reception for our son's wedding at Chavenage House and it was simply perfect. Impressive but warm and homely, the House itself is ideal, with its glorious gardens and fabulous interiors. The family could not have been more welcoming and helpful and it has been a delight to work with them to create a perfect day.
