Ah, the wedding day is finally over, and now for the bit that you know you’re going to enjoy; yes, that’s right, it’s time for the honeymoon. But where have you chosen to go? Have you picked a nice exotic honeymoon spot, or is it another budget week at The Seaview Guesthouse in Clacton?
Ok, Clacton isn’t all that bad, or at least that’s what Great Aunt Ethel says. Mind you, she hasn’t been there since 1937, but couldn’t you find a slightly more exotic honeymoon location? Well, if you’re still struggling with your options, then have a think about adding the Top 5 suggested below to your list.
Exotic honeymoon location 1: Costa Rica

Yes, you couldn’t get too much further away from Clacton than taking a trip to Costa Rica.
In Costa Rica you can spend your honeymoon relaxing either on the Pacific Coast or, for a bit of a change, lazing beside the Atlantic Ocean. With the country being so narrow, you could easily visit two oceans in one day, and relax or laze by both.
For such a relatively small country, there’s a lot going on. They have mountains, volcanoes and rainforests inhabited by more species of birds than you could ever imagine. You can travel along the rivers and see animals that you’d be hard pressed to see in most zoos. As a highlight, there’s the chance to do the Turtle Tour, which is a must when you’re there.
And if you want to get out and do something truly unforgettable, then try the Canopy Tour; in how many other places on Earth can you zip through a rainforest at treetop level?
Exotic honeymoon location 2: Venice
While this may not be a long-haul destination like Costa Rica, which may indeed be a good thing, this is undeniably one of the most romantic city breaks that you can take.
Known by many as the Birmingham of Europe on account of its numerous canals, romance-filled streets, and unfathomable local dialect, Venice is one of the great honeymoon locations.
This is a truly fantastic place if you want to take in some culture, architecture, and sit damply in a long, narrow boat while someone sings dubious snatches of opera at you. Venice really is a spectacular location, as far as cities go.
Exotic honeymoon location 3: Queenstown
Located in New Zealand’s South Island, and not to be confused with Queensland in Oz, this much smaller and infinitely more remarkable place is a long-haul journey that’s going to be well worth the extra time it takes to get there.
If you like adventure – and after all you did just get married – then this place has it all, right there in front of you. If you’ve ever fancied skiing or snowboarding, white-water rafting, jetskiing, paragliding, quadbiking, jet boating, hang-gliding, skydiving and, of course bungee-jumping, then this is the place to do it.
Naturally there are numerous boutique and luxury hotels for you to choose from, so the romantic side is taken care of, too.
Oh, and if you keep your eyes open, you may just spot a Hobbit or two; but try not to encourage them.
Exotic honeymoon location 4: The Seychelles
This group of islands is a wedding honeymoon location that more and more people are starting to choose.
Situated in the Western Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Africa, the islands are surrounded by some of the cleanest and clearest ocean water you’ll ever see. The swimming and diving in the waters surrounding the 115 islands is simply breathtaking.
Of course, it’s not all about the beaches. The Seychelles offer rainforest, tropical weather, fantastic island resorts, art galleries and studios, eco-tourism – and the list goes on.
Exotic honeymoon location 5: Clacton-on-Sea
At the insistence of Great Aunt Ethel, and for the more finance-conscious of you out there, we had to include this homegrown tourist trap, too.
Situated in Essex, this is a seaside resort that’s been pulling in the punters since it was developed for tourist recreation back in 1871. True, its heyday was between the 1950s and ‘70s, and it is nowadays better known as a retirement location, but that simply means you won’t have to fight off all of the other honeymooners when it comes to visiting Clacton Pier or St John’s Church, and when the two of you are standing, silhouetted hand-in-hand, gazing out over the Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm towards the dawn of your romantic hopes for a bright, sustainable future.
If the above few choices have only managed to whet your appetite for more superb honeymoon locations, then at this stage it would pay to visit one of the better-established honeymoon specialists to find out more. They will be able to give you advice on the best places to go, and how to get the best deals.
So, now’s the time to get in and get everything booked, possibly through one of those honeymoon specialists, and before you know it you’ll be jetting away on your exotic honeymoon; I hear Clacton’s nice this time of year… (nearest airport – Stansted).
